A Celebration for Nell

Nell had tried something a little different for dinner tonight. She'd made a large, and hopefully tasty, vegetable stir fry and had stir-fried some beef in a different pan so those wanting meat could have some. She also had homemade sourdough bread, salad, and a vegetable broth based soup to start the meal.

The apartment was spic and span, the cats were happily curled up on their cat trees, for however long that would last, and she thought she was prepared as she could be for her first ever birthday celebration. Now to wait somewhat anxiously for her guests.

"Definitely not," Lana assured her. "But the cake is vegan, I made sure of it," she assured them all.

"I had no doubt that you'd make sure of that," Nell assured her. "Thank you."

"You're welcome," Lana said. "Are you enjoying yourself so far?"

"Yes," Nell said. "So far it's just myself and some friends having dinner and they happen to have brought me presents, which is very kind of them."

"In that case, I suppose we're doing it right," Lana said, smiling.

"I suppose we couldn't really be doing it wrong," Nell said with a smile, "But I feel much more relaxed."

"It's my pleasure," Lana assured her. "You're my friend. I'm just glad we can treat you like this again now."

"And for the tree! Thank you for the tree," Nell said. She looked around at the mostly empty plates. "Maybe I should open the presents from the Detective and Marc and Steven and then we can have cake?"

"Why not?" Lana grinned. "It honestly didn't occur to me to wrap mine, but now I'm rather wishing I had. I love a challenge."

Nell laughed, imagining the wrapping job on the tree. "That would look quite something," she said.

"Very pointy and glowy," Lana agreed. "Or just a really awkward shape."

She laughed again. "I don't imagine the tree would be very happy in either case!"

"Maybe it would like it!" Lana said, laughing in turn. "All wrapped up like a blanket. Who knows? We can't exactly ask it. Well, not yet, anyway. I'll give you time to get acquainted first."

"Once I got to know it I'd definitely be able to tell if it liked being wrapped up or not," Nell said with a grin.
