A Celebration for Nell

Nell had tried something a little different for dinner tonight. She'd made a large, and hopefully tasty, vegetable stir fry and had stir-fried some beef in a different pan so those wanting meat could have some. She also had homemade sourdough bread, salad, and a vegetable broth based soup to start the meal.

The apartment was spic and span, the cats were happily curled up on their cat trees, for however long that would last, and she thought she was prepared as she could be for her first ever birthday celebration. Now to wait somewhat anxiously for her guests.

"Would you like to try to go to something Monday?" Steven asked. "It'd be last minute, have to take what we can. But I'm up for it if you are."

"The kittens could take care of you," Steven pointed out. Reminded, he looked around. "Are they about? Or too shy for parties?"

"Nexu are cats," Lana explained. "Some people keep them as pets, and they're apparently quite loyal. And the kittens are adorable."

Sounded great, right? "But they grow to several meters, and between their rows of teeth, huge claws, ridge of spines, and whip-like tails, they're known for being rather deadly."

"Oh!" Watts beamed at him. "Absolutely, yes. I would love that, if we can." Impulsively, he leaned over to give Steven a blink-and-you'd-miss-it quick peck on the cheek.

"Clearly you've never had cats," Nell said. "Won't even make you a cup of tea if you're feeling poorly. Might curl up with you, though."

She nodded to the cat trees where the sleepy kittens were starting to wake and notice the company. "Oh, I'm sure they'll be very happy to be a part of all this."

"I am," Lana said. "I'll likely chaperone the dance, and I'm curious if any of my classmates will come back. I wouldn't mind seeing some of them. Any fun plans for the weekend, or is it all paperwork?"

"Might not be the best thing to have here," Nell said, "though if I was living in Soulwood they might work out okay. As long as they didn't hunt all my other animals."

"Oh, well..." Watts said, and for a moment was briefly disappointed he wasn't at his or Steven's apartment, where there would be several varieties of each that he could have Lana try for comparison. "There's a number of factors, you see- the two countries are close by, but the climate is different enough that it makes a difference. Portugal's also got far more varieties of actual grapes..." oh, you've gotten him started, Lana. Going to be hard to get him to stop now.

"Only ever had the fish," Steven admitted. "Not ones for curling up with you no matter how well you feel. Not unless you can fit in the tank I suppose."

"I'm taking Llewellyn about for a few days," Steven said. "Come back early next week. Might I ask you something, though? What's a Homecoming?"

"Suppose if all else fails there's takeout," Watts suggested, blasphemous as that was. Or they could go with Steven's suggestion of just eating cake and ice cream.

"Probably not then. Plus if they dozed off you'd drown and then you'd be the fish food."

Steven gave him a fond smile in return for the kiss, not wanting to make the reaction too obvious to draw attention to what Llewellyn had done. "I'll see what's available. Now I'll warn you not all shows are open on Mondays but I'm sure there's something we can find."

Nell laughed. "We can order pizza."

Though just eating cake and ice cream definitely would be a better choice.

"Best not to try it then," Steven agreed. "But they are good company. Great listeners."

Raiden did excellent pizza, though! Even the vegan ones!

"Nothing wrong with a good pizza, but I'm sure it won't come to that," Watts said.

"I'm sure whatever's available will be grand," Watts said.

"I'll see if I can't get us something at the Globe," Steven said, excited at the idea of being able to take Llewellyn to a show again. "And we'll have to plan to go back when the V&A does the night time concerts. It's like they're made for you. String quartets in a museum!"

"A combination I hadn't thought of, but you're correct, I am going to need to experience it," Watts said.

"V&A could be interesting for you as well," Steven said. "They've modern things as much as historic. Or contemporary for you."

"I've been before," Watts told him. "Not too long after they renamed it, actually. But, like many things, I imagine there have been some slight changes in the intervening years."

"Perhaps something for Monday daytime then," Steven said. Assuming they left the flat at all, other than for a show. "Imagine you'd find the clothing of interest at the very least."

"Got me figured out, do you?" Watts said fondly.

"You're not the only one who's observant," Steven replied. "Have to keep up with you, don't I?"

"I just- hope you know how much I appreciate that. And you," Watts told him.
