Nell had taken the day off from the flower shop. By the time she and Gladio had gotten back from Alaska - Sunday night, Monday, who knew with time zones? - all she'd wanted to do was unpack and curl up for a while.

Which was also why tonight was an order-in night for dinner - pizza, Thai, Chinese... she didn't care. It had been a wonderfully relaxing weekend and she was going to enjoy that feeling for a while longer.

Of course, this was Nell, so sure, laundry had been done, bread, had been made, everything was put away, but after that she indulged in a little dozing on the couch with kittens - and Gladio if he was so inclined.

Soulwood would let them know when guests arrived.

Nell and Gladio had made their way out to the end of the dock, nicely wrapped up in Nell's case, at the end of a long and glorious day. It was still fairly light, the sun wouldn't set till just after nine, but they were in a perfect position to watch the sun set.

A strange sound caught Nell's attention and she shifted in Gladio's arms to see what it was. "Look, those are the loons!"

Their beautiful haunting sounds echoed over the water and Nell just closed her eyes for a moment to listen. "So amazing. And eerie."

Nell had planned this out very carefully in order to hopefully surprise Gladio with a trip he would truly enjoy. She'd made sure he packed plenty of warm weather gear and she'd packed a couple of bins with supplies as well as a whole special bin with plants and seedlings.

And then they were off with a portal through to Anchorage, Alaska, where Nell left Gladio as she met with a woman to hand over the bin of seedlings and discuss the garden Nell had carefully planned out for her.

Then it was time for a ride in a very small floatplane off to an island in Skwentna.

Nell had arranged for tonight to just be a small get together to celebrate Gladio's birthday, which was actually tomorrow, but since the chocobros were all free tonight, tonight it was. Nell had planned to serve a great deal of Cup Noodle (sorry, Ignis) with a variety of very tasty ingredients to add in, as well as some actual home made ramen for those who preferred a less cup based food.

There were, of course, the usual side dishes and a beautiful three berry pie for dessert, though she was counting on Ignis for the fancy birthday cake.

It had been a lovely weekend and Nell was feeling happy and relaxed. She'd arranged for someone to open Covent Garden Flowers in case she wasn't able to make it in, so she had the day off. She'd used the time to make some venison stew and some good bread to go with it. She'd also made chocolate chip skillet cookies and a skillet Texas sheet cake to serve with ice cream later.

The rest of the day was spent puttering around the house and spending time with Gladio and the kittens whenever they happened to find her and making sure the house was ready for guests.
mylandmyrules: (Hopeful)
Nell and Gladio stepped through the portal shortly before sunset onto the grounds of Soulwood. The sun was setting through the trees to the west, beautiful colors suggesting a bright tomorrow.

As soon as Nell stepped onto the land its energy rose up to greet her. Even someone without Nell's connection to the land couldn't have missed it. Everything was suddenly a little more vibrant, the trees seemed to lean in close, the birds hushed then sang louder than before, and Nell positively glowed.

Her hair and face seemed more vibrant, and everything about her seemed to reach out and connect with the land until an imaginative person might have almost thought he could see the bright lines of force connecting them.

She pushed a wayward strand of hair off her face - was it the breeze or was her hair floating gently in the energy currents? -and took a moment to kick her shoes off and sink her feet into the dirt, eyes closing for a moment.

"Ain't no one watching us'uns here," she said, sliding back into the language of home, and smiled up at him, reaching for his hand. "Just we'uns and the land and its creatures. Welcome to Soulwood, Tall Man."

The theme for tonight was going to be apples apparently. Nell made applesauce and pie, of course, but also a pork chop dish with apples and a vegan stewed apples and vegetable casserole. Might as well use them all up!

The kittens seemed more tired than usual as if the time change had affected them as well. Nell wouldn't be sad to head to bed early herself, to be honest, but she was looking forward to seeing her friends.
mylandmyrules: (Wide Eyed)
Nell was glad that she'd arranged for someone else to cover her shift at the flower shop today. After their odd vacation she was glad to be home and able to relax a little - after she'd cleaned the house and shop from top to bottom (relaxation was a different animal for Nell).

She wasn't sure if people would be coming over tonight after the events of the last week, but there was fresh bread made and plenty of the usual stuff to nibble on. If anyone wanted more they could always order something in.

By midafternoon Nell had cleaned and organized everything to her standards and was able to settle in with a cup of tea and a good book to cuddle with the kittens - and Gladio if he was around.

Guests could stop by (or not) when they were ready.
mylandmyrules: (Default)
Nell had made several casseroles today - one a pasta dish with sausage cooked in with hamburger and tomatoe sauce and lots of cheese and a smaller vegan one with an assortment of vegetables instead of the meat. She'd also baked an assortment of quick breads, banana, pumpkin, and cornbread for those who might not like the casseroles. They would also be a nice addition to breakfast in the morning.

There were, of course, the usual assortment of snacks and desserts, and Nell was contemplating whipping up a batch of brownies.
mylandmyrules: (Default)
Nell had messaged Gladio to see if he'd make sure there was some sort of food for the evening - take out was more than fine - since all she really wanted after work was to put her feet up and read by the fire for a while.

Liliana and Ignis were still away - or back away - and Prompto and Liz were having a quiet night after the party, so at most it might be Detective Watts, Steven, and Lana.

Or it might just be Nell and Gladio, which was just fine as well.

Still, there would be food and by the time anyone might arrive Nell would be rested enough to greet them properly.
mylandmyrules: (Hopeful)
Nell had decided on lasagna for dinner - one extra large one with meat and a smaller one without. She made up a garlic spread for the bread, that Gladio could slather on her bread before they heated it up for serving, and a large salad. That plus the usual snacks and desserts should be more than enough for anyolne who might stop by.

Once everything was set and the lasagna ready to pop in the over she had some time to put her feet up by the fireplace and snuggle with the cats and/or Gladio if he was there. Though if he growled against her neck she might just have to drag him off to the bedroom.
mylandmyrules: (Innocent)
Nell had brought some of the puzzles home with her, figuring that she and Gladio might have fun doing them in front of the fire on a snowy or rainy day. For some reason she hadn't felt like cooking today, so shehad ordered a variety of pizzas for them to have. She did have some freshly baked cookies and brownies as well as various ice creams and toppings for anyone interested.
mylandmyrules: (Hopeful)
Nell had decided recently that living on Unicorn Street must have been a sign because the odds of her having such amazing things in her life had been as unlikely as finding a unicorn outside of Fandom.

She had decided to make a large batch of spgahetti for the gathering, one pot of sauce with meat and the other vegan. Surprisingly enough the pasta itself - most of them anyway - were actually vegan.

In any case, the rich smells of the sauce filled the house, welcoming whoever made it over tonight.
mylandmyrules: (Hopeful)
It was cold outside. Very cold. Nell had gone out up on the roof about noon to check on the hives and the plants in the greenhouse. That done she'd retreated indoors again where she planned to stay. The house was clean and she was caught up with all her chores, so the next thing to do an a really cold day was to cook.

And now she had someone in the house who'd be happy to eat whatever she made, so she didn't have to restrict herself to only what she felt she could eat herself or freeze easily. Which is why she had a pot of chicken soup, another of spaghetti sauce, and a third of the spicy stew she'd made last Monday. And once those were going her bread dough should be ready to go in the oven.

Then she could curl up with a good book - or a warm Gladio if he was around and willing - in front of the gas fireplace. It might not be quite as good as a real fireplace, but it was warm and looked good.

[Open for the new housemate or anyone else who might smell the food and want to stop by.]
mylandmyrules: (Hopeful)
This would be the first time everyone would get together at the now shared residence of Nell and Gladio. The overall decor hadn't changed much, though the number of books had at least doubled and there were 100% more swords around.

Nell had made a delicious all vegetable stew as well as a similar beef stew that was more than a little spicy. She made fresh sourdough bread to go with them both and had biscuits ready to pop into the oven for a mixed berries and cream version of strawberry shortcake for later.
mylandmyrules: (Default)
This would be the first time people gathered here in the New Year, so Nell wanted to make it a little special for everyone. She had carefully handpainted and baked mugs for each person so they'd each have their own special one for when they were here.
mylandmyrules: (Default)
Nell had some small homemade Christmas gifts for her family. Jams and teas and plants, as usual. Normally she'd have dropped them off at one of the Christmas markets as usual, but she'd delayed and dithered over what to do. She knew Gladio would be willing to go with her, but she'd intended for this to just be a flying trip, not even stopping at Soulwood, and she hated to make him just lurk in the shadows while she talked to some of the church women.

So she'd gone back and forth in her mind about it until here she was on the Saturday before New Years Eve and the last of the markets for a bit. Gladio was off for a bit and she knew it was kind of a cop out, but she decided she'd take the opportunity to just pop over quickly and then home again.

So she left him a note telling him what she was doing - and yes, she rather hoped she might be back before he even knew she'd gone, not that she was going to hide the trip from him, of course - and stepped over to catch a portal to just outside the market area and walked in.

Sister Erasmus was the first person she saw from the church and she quickly hurried over to help the older women bring her goods to the stall.

The church woman gave Nell a scolding for staying away so long, even if Nell had left messages now and then for her family. At least she'd allowed as how Nell wouldn't have been able to come visit on church grounds without the very real likelihood that she'd have been prevented from leaving again. And she'd agreed to deliver Nell's gifts.

Nell had hoped to see one or two of her sisters there, but apparently they'd sold the last of their stock earlier in the week, so she had to be satisfied with some of the gossip from Sister Erasmus before heading back to Fandom.

She was a bit subdued as she went into her house. Even the eager greeting from the kittens didn't do much to lighten her mood.

(For the lightly modded person in question, though if anyone else had cause to stop by they could )

Nell and Gladio made their way back to Nell's in one of the brightly lit rickshaws. They required less thought and ample opportunity for kissing, though Gladio had joked that they could have just strung him up in lights and let him carry Nell. To which Nell had responded that she'd rather he save his energy for other things.

She'd set out honeyed rum for the squirrels before she headed to class in anticipation of Gladio's response - not that there'd been much guess work needed there - so, once the rickshaw had dropped them off, all that was left to do was break off their latest kiss, unlock the door and lead him upstairs.
mylandmyrules: (Hopeful)
There was no gingerbread on the menu tonight. Nell had had enough of that nonsense. Instead she'd made a macaroni and cheese casserole and a smaller veggie casserole. She also had homemade hot chocolate ready to go as well as an assortment of frosted Christmas cookies carefully labeled as to which ones were vegan.

The gas fireplace was on and she spent some time contemplating whether she should get a Christmas tree or not. She'd never actually decorated for Christmas, though she'd enjoyed seeing the decorations around town.
mylandmyrules: (Innocent)
Leaning into the plates of latkes that kept appearing, Nell had prepared various toppings and sides to go with them, including applesauce, a pomegranate and honey topping, and a cilantro mint chutney. She also had a curried butternut squash and apple soup simmering on the stove as well as a variety of pastries for sweets after dinner.

The kittens were mostly dozing, though they'd no doubt rouse themselves when company came in to get their petting and snuggling in.
mylandmyrules: (Laughing covering mouth)
Nell was hoping Liliana did join them tonight and she had the plan s for flower delivery all set for her approval. She'd made a batch of red velvet cupcakes - some vegan - for dessert as well as a noodle casserole for those looking for a more filling dish. The usual snacks and other treats were also available and there was always ice cream in the freezer.

Nell and the kittens were playing with a feather on a stick, them chasing it and her laughing at their antics, as she waited for her guests to arrive.
mylandmyrules: (kittens snuggling)
Nell was rather tired after her day at work and then rushing home to get the orders from her own store ready to ship out in the morning. Which meant her food offerings were a little less involved than they might otherwise have been. Still, there was a stew and freshly baked biscuits as well as various nibbles and the usual offerings for dessert.

Once everything was all set out and ready to go, she settled herself in front of the gas fire with a book and a cup of tea. And, within seconds, she had two kittens snuggled in her lap as well.
mylandmyrules: (Hopeful)
Nell had been busy cooking and baking for the past few days. All right, maybe it was just going to be herself and Gladio, but she wanted to make an extra pie for Steven and the Detective, and something for Lana, and extras to send home with Gladio for Ignis, and another pie for Liliana, and a mini feast to leave for Eleanor, and a pie for Box, and... These things took time!

Besides, it was fun to do.

They'd thought about going to Hannibal's big feast, but ultimately decided that a quiet cozy day at home was what they both wanted. Her food definitely wouldn't be anywhere near as fancy as Hannibal's, but it would be delicious and there'd be more than enough to share later. So here they'd stay.

The house was filled with delicious smells and the kittens were dozing with full tummies from the extra little treats Nell dropped in their bowls as she was cooking. Everything was set to go with just a few last minute touches, so Nell settled herself down for a cup of tea by the gas fireplace to relax for a few moments.
mylandmyrules: (Smiling shy)
Nell was in the mood for comfort food today so she made a big pot of chicken and dumpling stew and a smaller pot of a veggie stew for the Detective if he should stop by. She also prepared a batch of sourdough rolls to pop in the oven so they'd be piping hot when it was time to eat. Then, with time to relax, she curled up on the chair by the gas fireplace with the cats and read her book.
mylandmyrules: (Intimate)
Nell hadn't really thought too much about today until it was here. Then she considered what she actually most wanted - since that seemed to be the important thing about it - and once she'd done that, it was easy.

Which is why Gladio had joined her in the late afternoon for some snuggling in front of a movie and then dinner whenever they got around to it. Not as if they'd go hungry at Nell's. Later, if it wasn't too cold, she planned some time together on the roof to watch the stars and laugh together.

And since it was an evening she didn't want to end, she'd asked him to stay over so she could fall asleep in his arms. Could anything be more perfect?

[Mostly establishy. Gladio modded with permission.]
mylandmyrules: (Hopeful)
Nell had added the basics for making a variety of nachos to her usuals tonight. Lana and the Detective had been handwavily notified of the date change and Nell hoped they'd be able to make it. She was also hoping Gladio would be interested in staying over again tonight since that would be just the perfect end to the evening.

The kittens were out and about being adorable and getting into everything.
mylandmyrules: (Intimate)
It always took Nell a moment to orient herself in the morning - especially when she wasn't alone in her bed when she woke up. Given that this was only the third time it had happened she supposed she could be forgiven for that.

It was still a little early, even for her, so she closed her eyes again and smiled as she moved even a little closer to his warmth.

He'd come over last night and joined her on the roof to tell her all about his day - though, as she'd suspected, it took a while for them to get past the first kissing part of the evening. It had been lovely to sit with him up under the stars and even nicer in a stomach fluttering way to take him downstairs into the house then into her bed rather than kissing him goodbye and sending him on his way.

She wasn't quite ready yet for full intimacy, but she did truly love the kissing and touching that they'd progressed to and especially the whole falling asleep in his arms part. And now the whole waking up in his arms part.

Her brain told her it was time to get up, make some breakfast for her and her guest and just generally get her morning started. Her body, however, planned to stay right where it was for some time yet. So that's just what she did.

[Gladio modded with permission, of course.]
mylandmyrules: (Default)
Nell wasn't sure if anyone would come by tonight given all the strange things happening in town, so she hadn't put anything out. Of course she could easily put something together and she'd done a fair amount of stress baking, so no one who showed up would go away hungry.

She had some quiet music on and was sitting in the living room with the kittens and a good book. The Soulwood soil at the base of the stairs would let her know if someone was coming and if it was anyone she knew.
mylandmyrules: (Smiling shy)
Gladio had found places on his hike yesterday that he just had to show Nell, so they spent the day doing an abbreviated version of the hike. Nell was in raptures over the huge trees and old world forests they went through and spent a fair amount of time communing with the forest. They had fun seeing who could notice animals quicker - Nell through the land or Gladio with his scouting. Nell won every time, but that just seemed to make Gladio happier.

They ate a delicious packed lunch while sitting in front of the most amazing view. The fact that they might have spent more time kissing than eating just made everything even better. Dinner was at a little out of the way place, but Nell honestly couldn't tell you much about what they'd eaten because it had been more about being together and laughing.

After dinner they made their way to the Onsen. Nell stripped down to her tunic top and leggings before coming out to smile shyly at Gladio. "The hot water feels so good."
mylandmyrules: (Hopeful)
Nell had been looking forward to tonight and had made an angel food cake to add to the usual foods she set out. There was also a hearty stew simmering because she'd felt like making one, which was also available for anyone who wanted some.
mylandmyrules: (Hopeful)
Nell reached out to take Gladio's hand and stood up. "I can show you one of my favorite spots," she said. and grinned at him. "Yes, I know, I have a lot of favorite spots."
mylandmyrules: (Hopeful)
Well, there was the fruit salad to end all fruit salads tonight as well as various fruit purees to have over ice cream or in drinks - alcoholic, smoothies, milkshakes, whatever. And Nell was there to welcome everyone with an offer of hospitality and safety.
mylandmyrules: (Default)
One of her customers had told Nell that today was National Dumpling Day and since it was a chilly and rather gloomy day, Nell decided to make her famous chicken and dumplings. She'd also ordered some vegetable gyoza for those preferring vegetables to meat.

The kittens were happy to get a little chicken added to their regular food, making them extra sleepy and cuddly for anyone who might want a snuggle.
mylandmyrules: (Default)
Tonight continued with apples. She'd put together an apple crisp that she'd pop in the oven just before they were ready to eat, with some vanilla ice cream and freshly whipped cream to top it. She'd also made, largely in case the Detective came, some apple caramel soft pretzels. And if he didn't come she'd bring some of them to him later in the week.

She was still feeling a bit tired and lazy once she'd gotten things ready so she curled up with the cats and a book while she waited for her guests.
mylandmyrules: (Laughing covering mouth)
Nell might just have hung some fairy lights around the kitchen and living room. Just because. Ignis wouldn't see them and Lana and the Detective, should they attend, wouldn't think anything of it, but Gladio would know.

She'd gone with finger foods for tonight, some sandwiches and a few hand pies both savory and sweet. Ice cream was also on the menu because the heat called for it. Otherwise it was mostly the usual fare. Which meant she had a little extra time to curl up in a chair with the kittens and read for a bit before people arrived.

Camping

Sep. 9th, 2023 08:35 am
mylandmyrules: (Wide Eyed)
Nell and Gladio had set out to go camping Saturday morning despite the weather reports. Neither of them was much bothered by the heat or the idea of rain. They found a suitable place, set up a tarp large enough for both of them to sleep under easily, and got a sheltered fire going. The afternoon passed comfortably, despite the heat and intermittent showers, with a lot of laughter, some nudging, and Cup Noodle by the fire.

Part of the afternoon found them lying next to each other on their own sleeping bags reading to themselves and occasionally sharing a perfect paragraph or two with one another. There might have been a little dozing and there was certainly a shared kiss or two.

But as it got closer to the time for Gladio to go get Iggy out for Three Minute Dates the weather became more violent, with loud cracks of thunder and the wind whipping up, and there was no way Gladio was leaving Nell alone out there in all of that. They managed to get everything packed up and back to Nell's just as the skies really opened, dropping everything just inside the back door to Nell's shop, laughing delightedly at being safe and back under a roof.

There might have been some more kissing, till finally Gladio pulled himself away reluctantly to dodge the raindrops back home. He told her to leave everything downstairs, that he'd help bring it up when he got back, but Nell put her hands on her hips and told him that she'd bring it upstairs if she wanted and he'd better hurry or he'd be late.

Whereupon he laughed, kissed her again and headed off.

Whereupon Nell got to work.

*******************

Nell spent her time well, setting up the tarp and sleeping bags again with some extra cushions to make up for the hard floor. There were fairy lights strung along the top of the tarp and among the plants filling the sides of the room. One had to have stars when one was camping, right?

She'd closed off the back room from the main part of the shop and shifted some of the bigger plants around to serve as trees, their containers large enough for even Gladio to lean up against. Candles in protective globes stood around the edges to give enough light to read by.

When Gladio returned he'd find Nell curled up on a cushion, reading quietly as she waited.

[For the one who was modded with permission.]
mylandmyrules: (Considering)
For some reason Nell had decided that she wanted to try something different tonight. She'd made her own pizza dough and fresh tomato sauce and had portioned the dough out so that everyone could make - or have her make if they'd rather - their own individual pizza with whatever toppings they chose. She had, of course, been sure to have some vegan cheese and plenty of vegetable choices should the Detective join them, in addition to the more usual cheeses and meats. There were also a number of herbs and spices set out to add at the end for just the right extra dash of flavor.

She hoped her guests would think they were fun
mylandmyrules: (Hopeful)
The theme of the day was lemon, apparently, though Nell had used actual lemons instead of just lemon juice. She had lemon cake with lemon frosting, lemon poppyseed bread, and lemonade cookies.

They were all delicious, but it might be a long time before she made an this lemony goodness again.
mylandmyrules: (Wide Eyed)
Twilight found Nell on the roof again, relaxed, tea in hand, one leg curled up underneath her as she watched the sunset, but tonight was even better. Gladio was in the chair next to her.

They'd had a delightful dinner and now they were sitting companionably there up on the roof, waiting for the stars to come out. Or, well, supposedly that was what they were doing. Nell would have been happy to sit in a mole hole watching paint dry as long as Gladio was there with her

Sometimes she wondered if she should be worried that he'd come to mean so much to her so quickly, but mostly she decided that she didn't care about any of that nonsense. Happiness was far too precious in her life to waste time over shoulds.

This was a gift of joy in a life that had had far too little of it and she wasn't going to fritter it away with worry.

"I know why you're here," she said with a teasing smile on her face.
mylandmyrules: (Wide Eyed)
Twilight found Nell up on her roof, all her work done, cup of tea in hand, one leg tucked under her as she gazed out over the horizon. It had been a very nice week and she'd managed to catch up finally from all she'd left undone or half done during the two weeks Gladio was gone. Also, she'd managed to harvest some honey from one of her hives and was thrilled to be using some of her very own honey in her tea.

Mostly she was just here to relax and watch the sun set and the stars come out. Maybe there'd even be a shooting star to wish on.

[Mostly just a quiet Nell post, but open should anyone want to stop by!]
